LOCAL NHS COMMUNITY TEAMS

There are several other groups of health professionals that work with the practice.  They can all be contacted through the practice and you can make an appointment with the district nurses, health visitors and the midwives.

  • District nurses
  • Health visitors
  • Midwives
  • Physiotherapist
  • Podiatrists
  • Counsellors
  • Community mental health teams
  • Macmillan nurse
  • Family planning and sexual health

District nurses

The district nursing team, lead by Hannah Simpson, aim to provide skilled nursing care to patients in their own home, working with patients and their carers to assist patients to achieve their optimum independence.  They offer skills in wound care, continence management, cancer support, health promotion and care of chronic medical conditions. They receive referrals from numerous sources including hospitals, GP’s, social services, patients and carers and coordinate care with social services and other agencies.

Health visitors

The health visitors, Kate Wild and Carol Wood, can give you advice on all aspects of parenting, children’s behaviour and staying well, particularly in children, women and the elderly. They run the child health clinics at Bentham or Ingleton Surgery, and they help with the antenatal classes. Every child less than 5 years old has their own health visitor.  They are also school nurses for the local primary and middle schools, and to Settle High School.  You can see your health visitor by appointment at Bentham or Ingleton Surgery, or they will visit you in your home.

Midwives

Bentham Surgery has its own midwives, Carol McGowan and Jane Nelson who cover the North Craven area.  The midwife-led antenatal clinics are held on Monday afternoons at Bentham Surgery, and parentcraft classes, by invitation, take place at the Looking Well in High Bentham.  The midwives also visit newly delivered mums at home following discharge from hospital.

For more information about the Craven Midwifery Service click here.

Physiotherapist

The physiotherapist, Jon Northrop, works at Bentham Surgery on Thursdays and Ingleton Surgery on Tuesdays.  He sees patients who are referred for treatment by their doctor. Some treatment is only available at Settle Health Centre so you may be asked to go there

Podiatrists

The podiatriasts see patients with foot problems at Bentham and Ingleton Surgery and are able to treat children below the age of 16 and patients over the age of 65.  They see patients who are referred for treatment by their doctor.

Counsellors

The counsellors can help with the difficult times in life, which can cause so much distress.  The senior counsellor is Jenny Hall. She is a highly qualified professional counsellor who is based at the Psychology Department at Airedale General Hospital. She sees patients at Bentham Surgery when they are referred by their doctor.

Community mental health teams

Members of the teams, particularly the community psychiatric nurses and occupational therapists based at Skipton will see patients at Bentham Surgery or at home. They can help with all types of mental illness.  They work closely with the practice and with the Department of Psychiatry at Airedale General Hospital. A consultant psychiatrist, Dr Chambers holds a monthly clinic at the surgery.

Macmillan nurse

Sue Gee, the Macmillan nurse specialist in palliative care for patients with cancer is able to give advice and support. He works closely with the doctors and community nurses.

Family planning and sexual health

Advice about all forms of contraception and sexual health is available from your doctor, the practice nurse or the health visitors, Kate Wild and Carol Wood.   A local authority family planning clinic run by Dr Gill Hodgson and Kate Wild is held monthly at Bentham Surgery. Dr McKirdy or Dr Armer will fit an intra-uterine contraceptive device (a coil) or place a long-acting depot contraceptive such as Implanon if you wish.

Confidential test and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases are available at local hospitals. You can telephone and make an appointment without contacting the surgery first. You can find contact details for these clinics here.
