FAMILY PLANNING AND SEXUAL HEALTH

Advice about all forms of contraception and sexual health is available from your doctor, the practice nurse or the health visitors, Kate Wild and Carol Wood.  Dr McKirdy will fit an intra-uterine contraceptive device (a coil) if you wish.  A local authority family planning clinic run by Gill Hodgson and Kate Wild is held monthly at Bentham Surgery. If you prefer you can attend another clinic run by the Primary Care Trust. There are several to choose from - click here for more information.

The Family Planning Association host a very good website that provides lots of information about family planning and sexual health.

If you are worried that you might have a sexually transmitted infection there are several things you can do.

1. Firstly there is very good information and advice available on the web from the Family Planning Association.

2. You can come and discuss your worries with you can now get tests and treatment right here in Craven. Simply call one of the GP Practices below and ask for a sexual health appointment. You don’t need to be registered with the GP Practice and your call will be treated confidentially.

Townhead Surgery, Settle, Tel: 01729 822611

Dyneley Surgery, Skipton, Tel: 01756 799811

Cross Hills Group Practice, Tel: 0844 4773030

3. If you prefer, you can attend any one of the genito-urinary medicine (or GUM) clinics in the local area. They provice confidential testing, advice and treatment for a range of illnesses that include all sexually-transmitted diseases.

Emergency contraception

If you have unprotected sex, then if you take an emergency contraceptive pill within 120 hours you have a good chance of preventing pregnancy. The sooner the pill is taken the more likely it is to be effective.

Emergency contraception can be used if:

  • you have had sex without using contraception.
  • you have had sex, but there was a mistake with contraception. For example, a split condom, or if you forgot to take your usual contraceptive pills.

We will always offer an appointment with a doctor or a practice nurse on the same day that you contact us (apart from weekends and bank holidays when the surgery is closed. Then it is best to contact the Out of Hours service on 015242 61202 rather than wait until the surgery is open again.) Requests for emergency contraception are treated sympathetically and confidentially.

For more information about emergency contraception click the link above to visit the NHS Choices website.
