HOW DO I ASK FOR A HOME VISIT? A doctor will visit you at home if you are too ill to come to the surgery. If you need a home visit please telephone Bentham Surgery (61202) before 11.00am. When you ask for a visit the receptionist will need a few details to help the doctor assess how urgently you need to be seen. The doctor on call for the day will usually phone you back and will arrange for one of the doctors to visit you, if it is necessary. You will always be seen on the same day. Please let us know if there is a particular doctor you want to see but it may not be possible for that doctor to visit you. The doctors are not available every day. Because our practice area is so large, sometimes a doctor will not have time to visit patients at opposite ends of the practice. In either case another doctor from the practice will visit you instead. Occasionally the doctor may arrange for you to receive a visit from a district nurse or, in an emergency, may call an ambulance or advise that you attend a local Accident and Emergency department.
What do I do if I need a visit after 11am? A doctor will always visit if it is necessary. The reason we ask people to call before 11am, except in emergencies, is that it helps the doctors to plan their working day to make the best use of their time.
What are the alternatives to a home visit? We recommend that you come to the surgery whenever possible, even in an emergency. At the surgery we have full access to your records including laboratory test results, x-rays and hospital reports and there are better facilities for examination and treatment. Home visits also take a lot more of the doctor's time than surgery appointments and so the doctor has less time for other patients.
