LOCAL COMMUNITY MIDWIVES

For most women the person in the NHS that you will meet most often is your community midwife. As well as checkingon you and your baby's health she can advise you on all your concerns of worries about your pregnancy.

You can book appointments for the Monday afternoon clinic at Bentham Surgery by telephoning the surgery (61202) or at reception.

We recommend that you take one folic acid tablet (400mcg) daily until the end of your 12th week of pregnancy, counted from the first day of your last period. It reduces the risk of your baby having spina bifida (a neural tube defect). You can buy the tablets over the counter at any chemist. Your first appointment will be with your 'named midwife". It will take about an hour. Do bring your partner or a friend with you if you wish. Your midwife will help plan your care through pregnancy. She will check your blood pressure, height and weightand test your urine (please ask for a sample ottle at the surgery reception first). She will examine your abdomen and take a blood sample.

All tests procedures and results will be fully explained to you. We recommend blood tests to check your blood group and rhesus factor and immunity to rubella (german measles) and to look for evidence of anaemia, sickle cell anaemia, thalassaemia, and infection with syphilis, hepatitis B, and HIV.

Your midwife can give you advice about diet, smoking, alcohol, exercise and drugs in pregnancy. Please ask your midwife about anything that is concerning you about your pregnancy.

You will be invited to attend parentcraft classes from around 30 weeks of pregnancy. Classes are a great way to find out new information about having your baby.

To contact the local community midwives

Telephone Settle Health Centre (01729 824113). Midwives are usually available between 8:30 and 9:30 in the morning. At other times you can leave a message on the answerphone. If you want to speak to a midwife urgently between 8:30am and 4:30pm please phone Airedale General Hospital (01535 652511) and ask the switchboard to bleep your named midwife.

After 20 weeks of pregnancy if you are in labour or between 4:30pm and 8:30am please phone the labour ward where you are booked to have your baby:
