LOCAL HEALTH, VOLUNTARY AND SOCIAL SERVICES We work closely with local health services, voluntary agencies and social services. Some services are only available if you have a referral from your doctor. These include physiotherapy, midwifery, conselling and the community mental health teams Local Hospitals We work closely with the Royal Lancaster Infirmary and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal. They are all part of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay Trust (UHMBT). Almost all our patients choose to be referred to one of these hospitals when they need hospital treatment. The UHMBT website gives lots of infomration about parking, bus routes and visiting times. Some patients choose to go to Airedale General Hospital but simply because of he distances involved they are few. However choice of mental health services is restricted to the county boundaries. Community mental health services in Yorkshire are provided from the Craven Centre for Community Mental Health at Skipton. |

Commissioning The NHS is organised into providers of care such as hospitals, community nursing teams and general practices and purchasers of care who are mainly the Primary Care Trusts. Making purchasing decisions and therefore planning health care provision is called commissioning. General practitioners have acted as commissioners in the health service since the 1990s but the government plans to increase the power and responsibility of GPs in commissioning with its new and controversial Health and Social Care Bill. For several years we have been members of the Craven Commissioning Group, with neighbouring practices in Settle, Grassington, Skipton and Cross Hills. Their interest is in commissioning the services provided by Airedale General Hospital and we are the odd one out in the group. The new Health Bill appears to open the opportunity for us to join South Cumbria commissioning group or consortium. We have much in common with South Cumbria, especially our interest in the services provided by UHMBT and we think that a move to the South Cumbria Consortium will enable us to improve the health care available to our patients. With the support of the Patient Participation Group and North Yorkshire Primary Care Trust we are campaigning har dto make this possible. You can keep up to date with our campaign here. |
