HOW DO I GET MEDICAL HELP WHEN THE SURGERY IS CLOSED?

Bentham surgery is closed between 6.30pm and 8am Monday to Friday, and all day at weekends and bank holidays. This time is called "Out of Hours". An emergency general practice service is provided during Out of Hours time by Cumbria Health On Call Ltd (CHOC) which has centres in Kendal, Lancaster and Morecambe and will visit our patients at home if it is necessary. CHOC was formed on 1st April 2009 by the merger of our previous out of hours service, Baycall and Cumbria Emergecy Doctors on Call (CueDoc).

If you need urgent medical or nursing help when the surgery is closed, telephone 61202. Your call will be diverted to the Out of Hours call centre in Kendal where trained staff will talk to you and arrange for a doctor to call you back as soon as possible, usually within 20 minutes. Please be ready to give the following details:

  • Name and age of patient
  • Address where the patient may be found, with directions if necessary
  • Telephone number if possible
  • Brief details of the problem and degree of urgency

Hearing impaired people can contact CHOC on 18001 0845 052 4999 (Typetalk).

The doctor may offer you advice, an appointment at one of the Primary Care Centres in Lancaster, Kendal or Morecambe or a visit by a doctor or a district nurse at your home if your medical condition makes it impossible for you to get to one of the Centres. In certain circumstances they may call an ambulance to take you to hospital if that is the best thing for you.

You can also seek advice from NHS Direct by telephoning 0845 4647 or online at www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

In an emergency you can telephone 999 and ask for an ambulance.
